Hi, I’m Neil. And this is the story behind my second book – The Self Provisioner: How to grow your own food and live a self-sustaining life in the digital age.

Gardening has long been a passion of mine. From buying my first seeds when I was aged 5 or 6 till now when I grow a substantial amount of my family’s food, I’ve loved every minute.

Living in rural Uganda in 2008, I learned a lot about what it takes to grow your own food. Some of my neighbours came to help sow this field of peanuts.

That’s the reason why I’m writing this book – because I want to share with you my passion for growing things and especially:

Growing your own food.

But this isn’t another book on self-sufficiency or how to live the ‘good life’ on a tiny plot of ground. Instead you’ll find a realistic take on growing fruit and vegetables to supplement your food shop, not replace it.

I’ve called this type of living ‘Self Provisioning’. Why? Because you use the land to provide for some of your needs – more realistic than relying on it for everything.

The book focuses mainly on gardening but we’ll also discuss meat. And how to get your hands on some for free – or nearly free!

Why not self sufficiency? Because it’s an unrealistic pipe dream for most. Can it be done? Possibly. But I work a full time job and like seeing my family too. I also love the thrill of being able to grow some of my own fruit and veg.

This picture was a big inspiration for this book. I’d grown ‘everything but the chicken’.

Does this sound like you too? Then you’ll love my new book which is going to include chapters on:

  • The concept of Self Provision Gardening – what is it and why choose it?
  • How to choose the right plot of ground for your self provision garden
  • Why meat is in an important part of the self provisioner’s diet (and philosophy)
  • A four season gardening diary focused on self-provision
  • Types of crops to use
  • And more..

Gardening and Writing – My Two Passions

I’ve been writing for more than ten years now and have been published internationally. My debut book, A Father’s Mission (2017) has been bought in over ten countries and received numerous five star reviews.

That inspired me to keep writing. I’ve been blogging about gardening and self provisioning for three years. You can read some of these here:
