By now you have probably figured out that I’m a big fan of weight training. I like nothing better than getting in the gym and throwing some heavy things around.

Now you’re feeling inspired and you want to try it too. Or you’re coming in from a long lay off with little or no resistance training in between.

So How do you Begin Lifting if you’ve Never Weight Trained Before?

Follow These 3 Steps to get your Weight Training Started

  • The first thing you need to do is join a gym. Home workouts have their place but if you want to learn, a gym is where it’s at. Make sure you find a good gym. Use it as a learning environment.
  • Secondly, you need to be prepared to experiment. Fancy training programmes and one-on-one Personal Trainer sessions are fine but ultimately you’ll have to figure it out for yourself. Watch what other people are doing. Try different pieces of equipment, different weights and see what works for you. Approach it like a student. You need to learn as much as you can in that room. As a Dad, you have limited time so make use of it.
  • Read. Learn. Research. There are thousands of videos, tutorials, articles and training programmes on the internet. All for free. Bodybuilding.com is a good place to start if you’re a complete newbie. Get down to your local library and borrow Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. If you don’t know how to do an exercise, Youtube it. I did this for kettlebell swings and found this:

The sound quality isn’t great, but this guy looks like he knows what he’s talking about. Anyone who will strip to their shorts in front of a camera tripod in a public park and swing a cannon ball around is already a hero in my book.

If you’re just starting out. Let me know how you get on. Leave a comment or send me an email.
